Hot off the Press!- Fifteen Ps for Every Minister.

This is one book I was privileged to read before it went to print. Hot of the press; Fifteen Ps, written by Ehis Agboga, is not just a book for ministers, but a must-read for anyone interested in a closer walk with and work for Jesus.

Written in a contemporary easy-to-read style, the book teaches fifteen pertinent principles any believer needs to survive in these last days. With the airwaves rife with stories of climate change, natural disasters and weird signs in the sky, one sometimes needs to remind oneself that this is not another sci-fi movie but real life. The end has not been scripted by man but by God. Therefore, to end well, one needs to play by His rules.

The book isn't on Armageddon (that's just me) but focuses on things a believer needs to be conscious of so that when the Lord comes, He will be able to find faith on the earth.

The book made its debut 22nd of March 2010 on the Wipf and Stock Publisher's website where you can get more details and order copies for you and your friends (and enemies too!).

BOOK REVIEW: CAUGHT BETWEEN A DREAM AND A JOB by Delatorro McNeal II

I happened upon this book by chance but it was one of the best chance occurrences ever. I’m not yet through with it but I’ve already decided to have a copy of my own.

The author not just teaches you to stop jobbing (he has a full chapter titled Whoever told You to Job?) and start following your calling/ dream.

My boss saw the book with me and a quick scan of the pages was enough for him to smile and ask; Are you planning to leave me? (Which reminds me of a book a former colleague is always talking about; ‘How to Sack Your Boss.’)

The book encourages you to become a self starter and a natural finisher. You learn to unlock the untapped mine of potential within you. He described dormant potential as a dormant volcano, which could stay quiet for years, but the day it decides to erupt, watch out! And that is what every individual is.

In a no-nonsense, no-big-grammar way, Delatorro challenges you to stop comparing yourself with your peers and start evaluating the distance between who you are now and who you are meant to be!

With easy language, written in a one-on-one communicative style, with quotes from prominent persons, chapter points to ponder, exercise-book spaces for you to fill as you go along, this book helps you find the calling and exploit it, thereby doing what you love and getting paid big for it.

A book worth a hundred seminars, meant to be read more than once, you’ve got to get it!

The Night Out

You may run,
But you can only hide for so long
In a fish bowl.

Bella Kapina drove her Toyota Corolla expertly through the light Friday traffic. Sapele town where she had grown up was large and busy in comparison to this dead-end zone. She had whined and griped; but still here she was in Kabrika town not too far from Lagos, and yet too far for anything lively to happen. These people didn’t need a bank, they needed entertainment!

She parked her car and walked up the steps juggling her keys to find the appropriate one for the padlock on the protector. In Nigeria, all houses had metal bars on every door and window that led outside. They never wait for a burglary before they installed them; the bars were part of the architectural plan and design.

Her phone rang. It was Selena. “Yes I’m home, just take a cab, they’re safe in this town.” I hope you find one, she added mentally as she ended the call. Dead-end town, she shook her head.

Less than 30 minutes later Selena was at her house. Seven years younger than Bella, Selena was a handful. Within minutes she had put on the TV, tried the radio stations, made four out of town calls (who would she be calling within town anyway?) and had dinner. She was over for the weekend and would go back to Lagos by Sunday; if she survived tomorrow.

“So what’s up for tonight?” She hopped off the arm of the chair where the GSM network had better connection; some areas of the house were classified as out of network area, that would be something the service providers alone would be able to explain.

Bella looked at her glumly; “I was posted to Kabrika to open a branch. The bank did not consider night-time entertainment when they were trying to make life ‘comfortable’ for us.” She endured up to fifteen minutes more of Selena’s whining before relenting. “Okay, okay! Get dressed; we’ll go to the only place with passably decent entertainment.”

‘For Us by Us’ fondly called FUBU club was a child of necessity, created by the staff of Fortune Bank to survive acute boredom. It was a converted flat with the living room turned to a bar and dancehall area, while the rooms were set up for shooting pool.

“Bella!” Emeka Okeke was the brains behind FUBU. An Ibo boy to the core he had wangled capital out of the staff and was keeping a cool percentage from this venture. So far, none of the colleagues were ready to argue with him; they were getting great value for their money.

Bella stopped briefly to chat with Emeka while Selena drifted off and mingled; being Bella’s sister got her more than enough attention.

Many drinks, games and laughs later, Bella rounded her up. Selena wished there was another bar to hit; it wasn’t even well past midnight yet. In Lagos she’d be up till four.

Selena had turned up the car radio and they were singing along with Timbaland when it happened. Bella was driving, she blinked once and there was someone in the middle of the road! She swerved sharply to the right to avoid the figure who had thrown up its hands when the car lights beamed on it. Bella struggled to stabilize the vehicle which was now threatening to go into a spin but somehow it slowed and stopped.

The sisters turned to gaze out the back of the car, “Did I…?”

Selena could only whisper, “I think you did.”

Acting simultaneously both girls opened their doors and stepped out to survey the surroundings. There was a body lying facedown on the floor. They approached slowly and turned it around. It was a lady; bleeding and gasping for breath, trying to speak. Selena leaned in to hear better, but the lady grabbed her hand and pulled it to her back as she breathed her last.

Selena was surprised as her hand touched something cold and hard. She turned the woman over and saw a knife stuck in her back. Both girls jumped back and scanned the area, slowly retreating to their car. “She was saying ‘run.’” Selena realized with a jolt.

They turned and ran back into the car. Bella started the car and stepped hard on the accelerator. They sped off from the scene.

Both girls would need some seconds to recover from the shock of that encounter, and a few more to realize they were not alone in their car; At least that was what the owner of the third heartbeat in the back seat was thinking as they all sped along.

Run all you want dears, you are mine!

Poetry and Short Story Contests

At Maximum Impact (my church study group) we’ve been studying John Maxwell’s book, “Talent is Not Enough”. The book teaches that while talent can get you picked out from among all the other apples in the barrel; it's not sufficient on its own to get you to the peak of your game and keep you there. You need other ingredients like belief, preparation and perseverance. Yesterday, we handled ‘perseverance’.

While listening to personal experiences, I realized so many things could get one off track; like entering for competitions and never winning the prize- what if you gave up today never knowing that tomorrow you were supposed to have won? I know that’s what keeps people playing the lotteries but it’s a theory that does pay off in the long run, let’s not throw out the baby with the bath water.

Another thing that kills success is winning one battle and then pitching tent at the mountain ledge of your success forgetting that there’s still a mountaintop with a better view to conquer.

That said; there are new contests for members of the ChoWilson.com facebook group. We have a poetry contest;
http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=192723960112&topic=9927

and a Short Story contest;
http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=192723960112&topic=9928

Follow the links and submit to the category of your choice. The only requirement is that you be a member of the group. Watch out for the deadlines!!!

Snooze not that ye lose not. Good luck.

Motivation for Your Writing

What’s the major thing keeping you from that amazing writing business? What’s holding you from that six-figure writing career? That keeps you up at night wondering how tomorrow will be?

Well, it’s the same thing that keeps everyone else from breakthroughs not just in business but in every area of life.

Perseverance.

You have a great idea, its worth a million bucks, or at least it was till everyone told you it was wack. Or till someone read your script and said its never been done, or its been done so many times that it ought to be registered in the World’s Guinness Book of Clichés.

What do you do when you run into a brick wall as tough as that? Do you slip the manuscript into one of your drawers and mentally label it ‘ABANDONED,’ or do you go around looking for a second opinion.

Getting a second opinion is good; it boosts the morale when you finally find someone other than yourself who believes that your work is good enough. Perhaps by now that’s the only person who believes because you’ve been knocked so many times that you’re beginning to feel the nay-sayers are right. But what do you do when you reach your limit and get up to 50 people telling you it won’t work?

This is the reason why the opinions of others should NEVER matter as much as yours! Walt Disney got 301 rejections on his request for a loan before he finally got the loan to build Disneyland. Now that’s a LOT of negativity.

The way out is to do the following:

  1. Write down what you want
  2. Tell a few people and let them know you want to hear BOTH what they like about the idea and what they feel won’t work. Then ask them if they can think of a way around it (you’d be surprised how effective this technique is).
  3. Start working on the project. Analyse it, put it in stages and start doing it.
  4. Continue.

This is where perseverance comes in; it’s the thing that gets you to the finish line while your brain is screaming to you that your muscles just can’t survive another step. When you don’t fee excited about the project, keep at it. When you feel overwhelmed at the enormity of the work, take a deep breadth, and keep at it. When you’re frustrated to the limit, get a good night’s rest, wake up, and keep at it.

That just might be the day you get the break you need.

Let's go to the Movies!

The hottest story blog in the neighbourhood

Did you ever watch 'Annie'? I LOVED that movie, I even almost wanted to be an orphan singing my merry way through life. (until I realised people just didn't walk and sing through the streets.)

Well, those were the days of The Sound of Music, Bed knobs and Broomsticks, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Oliver Twist, you name it. Now there's animation and action in everything

So who's looking forward to seeing The Forbidden Kingdom, with the energy of Jet Li and the comical skillful kung-fu of Jackie Chan? The trailers are just too cool, and all roads lead to the cinemas on the 18th of April for the premiere showing. For Nigerians the Silverbird galleria is where it's at: before the pirated versions start popping up, that is. Go to http://silverbirdcinemas.com/ and get dates and times for movies that suit you and your family. Take the time to relax this month with some high powered action and adventure.

Oh, by the way; how good is your Kung-fu?

The Waiting Room

The hottest story blog in the neighbourhood

They sit and await the verdict
Heels click as others rush past
Everyone on their way to one of two places

Who can run faster than time?
All we do lives with us
In the halls of bright sterile light
Time moves slowly and we realize
If we sit still long enough;
Nothing is permanent or
Guaranteed

Rows are forgotten in the end
Only the love we stand to lose
One more breath, one more year,
More than that we cannot ask right now.

EATING YOUR AGE

The hottest story blog in the neighbourhood

Health is something one has to work at maintaining. Pollutions of all types abound and we have a duty to care for ourselves. Regular baths, proper feeding and sleeping habits, exercise, all these and more are necessary for that great looking skin, bright eyesight and glossy hair you see on the models in the TV commercials and billboards. We’d like to believe these things are expensive to maintain, however they are not.

Ageing with grace seems a miracle that comes in a bottle and/or with much pain- night creams, make up, surgery, the list goes on.. However, one’s real age does not have to be more than a number or counted in the number of wrinkles crinkles or estimated by the dry scabby texture of the skin. While we can’t stop ourselves from getting older (you can ask Dorian Gray how his attempt went) we can make ourselves glow in maturity as well as we did in our youth. The trick is to begin early. The basic health steps when applied properly and consistently would make you as pretty and health as you’d like to be as you grow older.

Recently an article on msn listed 7 foods with high age-defying benefits, these are:

1) Olive Oil- Olive oil is believed to reduce heart diseases, cancer, and prevent age-related diseases.

2) Yogurt- this sweet yet sour meal is championed by nutritionists as very good for women as opposed to milk. It helps the gut and reduces the risk of age-related intestinal illness.

3) Fish- Fish, though harsh on the breadth when fried and not too sweet when boiled, is very healthy and is recommended for all ages as opposed to meat, the older we get the less meat we’re to consume. Fish helps prevent the build up of cholesterol in the arteries and protects against abnormal heart rhythms.

4) Chocolate- Goody! Something sinfully sweet that’s good for you. Cocoa is actually what’s good for you, and chocolate is made from cocoa, so the chocolate beverages are good for your blood vessels, and healthy blood vessels mean lower risk of high blood pressure, kidney diseases dementia and type 2 diabetes. But please, go easy on the Chocolate bars.

5) Nuts- Nuts offer benefits similar to those associated with olive oil. And Seventh-Day Adventists claim from studies that those who eat nuts gain an average of two and a half years. Nuts also contain antioxidants vitamins and minerals.

6) Wine- Alcohol in moderate amounts reduces chances of diabetes, heart disease and age-related memory loss. Red wine in particular apart from helping digestion, has been found to contain resveratol which may be able to activate genes that slow cellular aging.

7) Blueberries- Compounds in blueberries, and other berries, helps balance and coordination as one ages as they have compounds in them that mitigates against factors that cause age-related deficits in memory and motor functions.

So start eating and drinking now and watch yourself glow and blossom like an evergreen tree that does not get ugly or dull with age.

MAN, AM I FEELING CHALLENGED!

The hottest story blog in the neighbourhood

Whenever i read books by authors i wonder how they do it? I'm going to stop being all uppity and get down to brass tacks, I'm going to write my stories on paper where they belong, before transferring them to electronic format. And I'm going to take all the offers to freelance that I've been rejecting. its time to do something with my life. How do i intend to get to the stage of Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker if i don't sit up. JK Rowlings just challenged me greatly, and she has just one head too. I'm ready for this!

For Love of Money

The issue now is BUSINESS, BUSINESS and more BUSINESS. what new jobs can one go into that can make one big bucks? no one wants to go hungry or be in want, so we fight too survive. I want to learn but I've found I learn on the job... so why waste my time going to school when I can learn all the stuff I want while someone pays me? the only thing missing is the certificates and titles HIGG, BIGG KSM PQRS and all that. But what shall we say to these things?

Anyways, let's be prayerful, and hopeful that we hit our millions before the end of this year. Impossible? That's why we pray for miracles.
